wene Jonas Retracts Support for Mahama and NDC – Public Apology Sparks Debate

Accra, Ghana – In a sudden and highly emotional turnaround, controversial Ghanaian social media personality Twene Jonas has publicly expressed regret over previously endorsing President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The outspoken critic, who resides in the United States, issued a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians, stating he will never again campaign for Mahama or support the NDC.

Known for his blunt social commentary and unfiltered live videos, Jonas admitted that his earlier public support for Mahama was a mistake. In a recent video that quickly went viral, he openly declared that his endorsement of the NDC was misguided and did not reflect the full extent of his political understanding or personal experience with the consequences of the party's governance.

According to Jonas, his frustrations stem from what he called the “dark days” of dumsor—an era of severe and prolonged power outages under the Mahama-led administration. He blamed the NDC for the collapse of several of his film and media projects at the time, claiming the inconsistent electricity supply had cost him dearly as a creative entrepreneur.

With strong words and a renewed stance, Jonas said: “I hate NDC, foolish people… Why will I campaign for this man [Mahama]?”—a bold statement that shocked even some of his closest followers, who remembered his earlier praise of Mahama’s bold tax reform promises.

In previous months, Twene Jonas had publicly commended the NDC for proposing the abolition of unpopular taxes such as the E-Levy, betting tax, emissions levy, and the COVID-19 levy. At the time, he hailed Mahama’s vision, claiming it would bring relief to ordinary Ghanaians. However, in this new shift, he clarified that those praises were directed at policy ideas—not political loyalty.

This admission and apology have triggered mixed reactions across social media. While some Ghanaians have applauded Jonas for taking responsibility and correcting his course, others have criticized him for flip-flopping on serious national issues. Still, Jonas insists that his motivation is to push for good governance and hold politicians—regardless of party affiliation—accountable to the people.

He concluded his statement with a plea for forgiveness from Ghanaians, particularly those who may have taken his previous endorsements seriously or felt misled by his influence.

Twene Jonas’s about-face adds to the complex narrative of political commentary in Ghana, where influencers and digital personalities now hold significant sway over public opinion. His message stands as both a warning and a lesson about the weight of political endorsements and the lasting impact of public influence.
